Marks and Spencer to provide 1,400 work placements

High Street chain Marks and Spencer is to create 1,400 work placements for young people, an eight-fold increase in the number it usually offers.

Developed with the Prince's Trust charity, the placements will be open to 16-24 year olds who will receive on-the-job training and the chance to gain full-time employment with the retailer.

Universal Credit protects tenants, but misunderstands low paid work

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced protections for tenants under the new Universal Credit system.

Speaking at the Chartered Institute of Housing Annual Conference in Manchester, Minister for Welfare Reform Lord Freud said that three levels of protection will exist:

Staying in education for longer is the best defence against unemployment, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The OECD, which exists to promote economic well-being around the world, says that during the economic downturn those who did not complete secondary education experienced a bigger rise in unemployment than those who completed education to at least 18 years old.

Pay shrinks by more than 10% in some regions -TUC

Pay in some regions of the UK has shrunk by more than 10% in real terms since the beginning of the economic downturn in 2007.

Analysis by the TUC has found that, when inflation is taken into account, the North West of England saw average wage drops of 10.6%, while the South West, West Midlands and Scottish economies have all seen falls of around 10%.

Every region of the UK saw wages falling in real terms, meaning unemployed people have struggled to be able to afford to get into jobs.

Marks and Spencer to create 700 jobs in South Essex

Retail giant Marks and Spencer is to create up to 700 jobs at its new logistics centre in South Essex.

The centre will be based at the new London Gateway container port near Tilbury and will open in 2016.

London Gateway will be the biggest container port in Europe, covering a bigger area than the Olympic Park, and Marks and Spencer will distribute goods from it across the country.

Construction on the 900,000 sq ft centre is due to start next year.
