Gingerbread campaign for single parents to get work

Charity Gingerbread has today launched its 'Make it work for single parents' campaign, aiming to make the world of work more accessible to lone parents.

There are 2 million single parents in the UK of whom 41% are not in work, and they look after 3 million children.

Gingerbread cites barriers including a lack of afforable childcare, few flexible jobs that allow single parents to tend to their children's needs, and a lack of support and training keeping single parents out of the workforce.

Four million people, including a million single parents in work, will lose out when the Government streamlines the benefits system next year, according to new research.

Gingerbread, which campaigns for lone-parent families, warned that the Coalition would "give with one hand and take with the other" when the Universal Credit is introduced from October 2013.
