Young unemployed suicidal and without hope, says charity

Young unemployed people are under severe stress leading to many feeling suicidal, a survey has found.

Charity The Prince's Trust commissioned YouGOV to find out how those aged under-25 feel about being out of work, with more than 900,000 still not in employment, education or training.

40% of youngsters have experienced the symptoms of mental illness, while even more shockingly one in three of the long-term unemployed have thought about suicide as a way out of their plight.

Marks and Spencer to provide 1,400 work placements

High Street chain Marks and Spencer is to create 1,400 work placements for young people, an eight-fold increase in the number it usually offers.

Developed with the Prince's Trust charity, the placements will be open to 16-24 year olds who will receive on-the-job training and the chance to gain full-time employment with the retailer.

Young unemployed more likely to be depressed

Young unemployed people are more likely to be depressed than those in work, The Prince's Trust has found.

Its fifth annual survey in to happiness found that 27% of those aged 16 to 25 who were in work reported that they felt depressed, compared to 48% of those who were not in employment, education or training (NEET).
