Are you unemployed and wondering about a career change?

Well, latest figures show a surprising shortfall in the number of hairdressers in the UK, with 13,400 unfilled vacancies.

According to L'Oreal, the shampoo and beauty products maker, the sector employs 245,000 people across the country, and there are gaps in all trades.

These include colourists, cutters, managers and receptionists.

The average spend on each visit to the hairdresser's is £29, and most go every two months.

Job satisfaction could be yours, with 79% reporting that they were happy in their work to City and Guilds.

Along with other service providers, hairdressers are taking over some of the empty shops in Britain's high streets, with one new salon opening each week.

Kenneth Campbell of L'Oreal Professional Products says: “A career in hairdressing offers something very special – the option to be highly creative and be highly successful. The profession offers multiple employment opportunities and, in a changing word, one thing is for certain, there isn’t a computer or an app that can cut your hair, so the longevity of the industry and a life-long career is assured.”
